Collect the dirty water that you are going to filter and set aside. Used in both drinking water and for aquariums activated charcoal also known as activated carbon is very porous. Place a coffee filter over the mouth of the bottle and tighten the cap over it then put the bottle upside down into a mug or cup. If you can set aside for a 1 2 hours it will allow anything that floats to rise to the top and then you can easily skim off some debris right from the start.

To make your own water filter use a craft knife to cut the bottom inch off of a plastic bottle then punch a hole in the bottle cap with a hammer and a nail. A homemade charcoal water filter is fairly easy and inexpensive to make. Charcoal is a carbon a porous material that attracts and holds many harmful contaminants. Because of this property the filtering material traps impurities in the water and holds them allowing clean pure water to pass through.
